When is the ITR due?
For most salaried individuals not under audit, it has usually been 31 July of the assessment year. It is sometimes extended, so check the current due date on the income tax portal.
What should I keep ready?
Form 16 from your employer, Form 26AS and AIS, bank interest certificates, capital gains statements, and proofs for deductions like 80C and health insurance.
Do I need to verify the return?
Yes. After filing, e-verify it with Aadhaar OTP or net banking within the allowed window, or the return may be treated as not filed.
Can I file after the deadline?
Usually a belated return is allowed until a later date with a late fee and some loss of benefits. Filing on time is cheaper and simpler.
