When should I change the batteries?
For alarms with replaceable batteries, once a year is a common guide, or as soon as one chirps. Sealed 10-year units do not need battery changes.
How long does a smoke alarm last?
Most manufacturers say to replace the whole unit about 10 years after the date printed on it. Check the label and the rules where you live.
