Questions
What should a backup check include?
Confirm the job ran, the file size is in the normal range, the backup is stored off the main server, and you can read it. Note the date of the last good copy.
How often should I test a restore?
At least monthly for production data, and after any change to the backup setup. Time the restore so you know how long recovery really takes.
What is the 3-2-1 rule?
Keep 3 copies of data, on 2 different types of storage, with 1 copy offsite. It is a simple target for both work and personal backups.
Can it alert me if a backup fails?
No. It is a reminder, not a monitoring tool. Pair it with your backup tool’s own failure alerts.
