When are estimated taxes due?
In the US they are usually due around April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15. In the UK, Self Assessment payments on account are due by 31 January and 31 July. Check the rules where you live.
Who needs to pay estimated taxes?
Usually people with income that has no tax withheld, such as freelancers, contractors, landlords and some investors. Your tax authority or accountant can confirm.
How do I work out the amount?
Many people base it on last year’s tax or on income so far this year. An accountant can help you pick a method that avoids penalties.
What if I miss a payment?
You may owe interest or a penalty on the shortfall. Pay as soon as you can to keep it small.
